Good to know about Germany

Germany has the largest population of any country in the European Union and in the wake of the Second World War, it has developed into an important European and international trade partner.

Germany is a country of immigration. Of the 82 million or so inhabitants, approximately 7 million are the owners of a foreign passport. It is not only the influences from other countries, which makes it difficult to describe Germany; there are also huge differences between the various regions. An insight into German society can be found on the “make it in Germany“ website.

Climate in Germany
Germany has a moderate climate. Winters are relatively mild, with temperatures ranging from -10 to +5 °C. In the summer, temperatures are between 20 and 35 °C. However, the climate can vary drastically depending on the region. There are numerous websites and apps providing precise information about the current weather.

Electricity
The standard power supply in Germany is 230 Volts/50Hz. In order to use foreign devices, you may need an adapter to convert the power. It is also possible that the type of plug used in Germany is different from the one you use in your home country, so please be aware that you will need plugs specially designed for use in Germany. If you are staying for a longer period of time, it is recommended that you purchase everyday items directly in Germany.

Telephone
The dialling code for Germany is 0049 (+49). A distinction is made between landlines and mobile telephones: landlines are connected to the building and are generally installed at the same time as the Internet. There are different types of contract, which vary in the range of services and prices they offer. A number of providers have branches in the city and they can assist you in finding the best tariff. A good tip is to ask for special overseas packages: that way, you can speak with your family and friends back home for a long time and at a low cost.

Units of measurement
In Germany, temperature is measured in degrees celsius (°C) (0°C = 32°F). Length is measured using the metric system (1 kilometre = 1000 metres = 100,000 cm). Weight is given in kilograms and grams (1 kilogram = 1000 grams). For a more precise conversion, it is recommended to use websites or smartphone applications.
